Shannon identifies with the turtle as her spirit animal, describing it as a creature that, like her, must navigate both land and water to survive. “We both must be near a large body of water to survive, but we both must come on the land for brief periods. We are both strong, yet gentle, wise, yet playful. We are both watchers.” This balance of strength and gentleness, wisdom and playfulness mirrors her approach to life and fitness.

Roots in the Bayou

Growing up in the unique community of South Louisiana's bayous, Shannon's childhood was filled with adventure and natural beauty. “I grew up in the bayous of South Louisiana; tourists have their picture taken in front of the ‘Highway Ends’ sign at the end of the road where I grew up in a ‘company’ town for a major oil production corporation.” Shannon cherishes these memories, which are deeply rooted in her identity and have shaped her outlook on life and community.

Reflecting on her happiest childhood memory, Shannon says, “Riding my bicycle along miles of bayou roads, breathing salty air, avoiding snakes sunning on the roads, watching for alligators.” The environment of her youth instilled in her a sense of vigilance and respect for nature.

A Journey Through Challenges

After a medical crisis, Shannon found herself in a low low, yearning for a way to reclaim her vitality. Inspired by the perseverance of Lance Armstrong, she sought a path back to physical fitness and joy. “I kept thinking about Lance Armstrong and how he worked so hard after his battle with cancer. One day I got tired of feeling sorry for myself and looked up the Pilates Collective Facebook page and sent a message. I was in the studio in just a few days! You people didn’t waste any time getting me away from my pity party!”

A Transformative Pilates Experience

From the moment Shannon stepped into Pilates Collective, her life began to transform. The impact of Pilates on her life has been profound. “Practicing Pilates has given me hope for an active-focused life. I did not want to grow old sitting on a couch. That's not me.” Shannon recalls a powerful moment in her Pilates journey: “I started crying the first time I stood up on a reformer and did squats. I didn’t think I’d ever do squats again.”

The benefits of Pilates for Shannon extend far beyond physical fitness. “I am not so scared to try new things. I used to be fearless; I taught all my kids and husband to rollerblade, cycle, and introduced them to CrossFit. My medical crises made me afraid of so many things. Pilates has made me brave and bold again. My family has me back.

Shannon’s commitment to an active lifestyle is a testament to her dedication and the support she receives from her family. “Being physically active isn’t a ‘good habit.’ Being physically active is the lifestyle my family and I want. We support each other and help each other so we ALL get the time and space to be active.”

One of the aspects of Pilates Collective that Shannon treasures the most is the sense of community and support. “There is NO competition. The students are supportive of each other even though we may not have regular sessions. It is fun to recognize another participant and chat about our individual needs.”

Shannon's journey with Pilates Collective has empowered her in ways she never imagined, reigniting her adventurous spirit and giving her a new lease on life. “Standing up on the reformer, doing squats, made me feel powerful and brave. I'm becoming my old adventurous self. I even have contemplated trying to ski - something I always wanted to try but never thought possible.”
